BCCI Approves 10-Team IPL From 2022 Edition at its Annual General Meeting

Indian Premier League has never witnessed the participation of 10 teams, competing for the coveted trophy. In 2011, 2012 and 2013, IPL saw the maximum number of teams’ participation with 9 franchises competing for the title.
The upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League will be played with the regular 8 teams and bids will be invited for the addition of two new teams from the 2022 season.
“At this point, the 10-team IPL, if BCCI intends to conduct it in 2021, will be a hurried one given that the tendering process and a mega auction will be difficult to organise in such a short span of time.
“It is only fair that the approval is taken and the big 94 match tournament is held in 2022,” a senior BCCI official said on the eve of the meeting.
“From the year 2022, 10 teams will be included in the IPL instead of 8. Two more teams were approved at today’s AGM. Two new teams will be introduced in the 2022 IPL,” said an official.
In another major development, the Board, in principle, decided to back the ICC’s bid for the inclusion of cricket, in the T20 format, in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics “after getting some clarifications from the International Olympic Committee”.
Women’s Cricket Resumption
There were also discussions about women’s Test cricket, a call on which will be taken by the apex council. It might see the light of the day in 2021. Women’s domestic cricket will most likely happen after the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy it has been decided.
Rajiv Shukla Appointed BCCI VP
Veteran Congress leader Rajiv Shukla was officially appointed the BCCI’s vice-president, a post which was vacated by his protege Mahim Verma from Uttarakhand.
It is also learnt that the Board decided in favour of former Indian captain and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly continuing as a director in International Cricket Council (ICC) board while secretary Jay Shah will be the alternate director as well as India’s representative at the Chief Executive Committee meets of the global body.
