Bhatia’s absence is a big blow for the hosts, as she has been a dependable presence in the middle order and behind the stumps. The BCCI confirmed that 21-year-old Uma Chetry will replace her in the World Cup squad.

Chetry, who has featured in seven T20Is for India, is yet to make her ODI debut. The World Cup will now hand her the chance to step into the spotlight. She has also been drafted into the squad for the upcoming ODI series against Australia, India’s final preparation before the tournament.

India Women begin their campaign on September 30 against Sri Lanka in Guwahati. Under Harmanpreet Kaur’s leadership, the team will hope Chetry can ease the void left by Bhatia as they aim to go deep into the tournament on home soil.
