Shane Watson says Kohli and Rohit face a tough return vs Australia but backs them to find form quickly in ODI series
Former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson believes Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will face a tough challenge in India’s upcoming ODI series against Australia, starting October 19 in Perth.
Both senior batters return to international cricket after an eight-month break, having last played during India’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 triumph. They skipped recent T20I and Test assignments to focus on limited-overs cricket.
Watson said returning after such a long gap is never easy, especially against a team like Australia.
“It’s always challenging to return to form quickly after a long break, especially against a strong team like Australia, which boasts some of the finest bowlers in world cricket,” Watson said. “They may need some time to regain their rhythm and get back into their preparation routines. However, given their skill and consistency, I believe they’ll be performing at their best again in no time.”
Despite the layoff, both players still feature among ICC’s top five ODI batters. Rohit, who will play as a specialist batsman under new captain Shubman Gill, joins Kohli as part of India’s experienced core for the series.

Watson added that the duo’s experience could prove vital, but this series might also mark the end of an era.
“Rohit and Virat might be making their final trip to Australia, and I believe the Australian fans will use this chance to express their deep admiration for both,” he said.
The former all-rounder praised Kohli for his fierce competitiveness in Australian conditions.
“Virat has always been one of Australia’s toughest rivals, consistently delivering strong performances and never backing down. There’s a huge amount of respect for his talent,” Watson said. “The same applies to Rohit, a true leader and a consistent performer.”
With the ODI series serving as India’s first major white-ball challenge after the Champions Trophy, the spotlight will be on how Kohli and Rohit adjust and inspire the team against a powerful Australian attack.
