AUS vs IND 2025: Rain Plays Spoilsport as India-Australia T20I in Canberra Ends Without Result
Rain washed out the India-Australia T20I in Canberra with India at 97/1, leaving fans disappointed in the series opener.
The first T20I between India and Australia at Manuka Oval, Canberra, ended in disappointment as heavy rain washed out the match before a result could be achieved.
Australia had won the toss and opted to field first, hoping to test India’s top order early. Abhishek Sharma gave India a brisk start, smashing 19 runs off 14 balls with four boundaries. His aggressive intent set the tone before the first rain interruption halted play after just 58 legal deliveries.
When the game resumed, the contest was reduced to 18 overs per side. Shubman Gill, who began cautiously, shifted gears with some classy attacking shots that thrilled the Canberra crowd. Suryakumar Yadav, returning from a tough Asia Cup, showed glimpses of form by launching a six that lifted his spirits.
Australia’s fielding was also tested, as Suryakumar got a lucky break when Josh Phillipe dropped a catch that could have changed the momentum. India continued to build on their start, scoring freely against spinner Matthew Kuhnemann, taking 22 runs off his two overs.
At 97 for 1 in 9.4 overs, India were in a strong position when rain returned, this time for good. Despite several inspections, the umpires eventually called off the match, leaving both teams and fans frustrated.
The series, which had been eagerly anticipated as a face-off between two world-class sides, will now move to the second T20I with everything still to play for.
