Ajinkya Rahane Fighting for India Comeback, Scores Century in Ranji Match After Losing Mumbai Captaincy
Ajinkya Rahane hits a determined 118 against Chhattisgarh in the Ranji Trophy after being removed as Mumbai captain.
Ajinkya Rahane showed once again that class and determination never fade. Just after being removed as Mumbai’s captain, the 37-year-old scored a brilliant 118 against Chhattisgarh in the Ranji Trophy match at the Sharad Pawar Academy ground in Mumbai.
The start was far from easy. Mumbai lost three early wickets on a damp pitch after overnight rain. The surface offered movement for pacers and grip for spinners, making it tough to bat.
Rahane was given the option to come later in the order, but he chose to walk in and take charge. He looked uncomfortable at first and even survived a few close chances.
But once he settled, the familiar touch returned. Rahane started finding gaps with crisp drives and flicks, slowly rebuilding the innings. With Siddhesh Lad at the other end, he formed a solid 165-run stand that pulled Mumbai out of trouble.
By the time he reached 118, Rahane was forced to retire hurt because of cramps. His celebration before walking off showed how much the hundred meant to him. It was his 42nd first-class century and a much-needed one after a tough phase with the bat. At stumps, Mumbai were 251 for 5 with Rahane still the main story of the day.
