Adam Gilchrist Tells MS Dhoni to Leave IPL Gracefully After CSK’s Worst Season
Adam Gilchrist has urged MS Dhoni to step away from IPL after CSK’s poor run this season.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are going through one of their hardest IPL seasons, and now, Australian legend Adam Gilchrist has advised MS Dhoni to consider stepping away from the league. As CSK sits at the bottom of the IPL 2025 points table, Gilchrist feels it might be the right time for Dhoni to bid goodbye on a graceful note.
Speaking on Cricbuzz before CSK’s important match against Punjab Kings in Chennai, Gilchrist said:
“MS Dhoni has nothing to prove to anyone in the game. Well, he will know what to do but, for the future, perhaps he does not need to be there next year. I love you MS, you are a champion and an icon.”
Tough Season For Dhoni And CSK
This year has been difficult for both Dhoni and his team. The 43-year-old veteran returned to lead CSK in place of Ruturaj Gaikwad but has struggled to lift the side. CSK has lost seven out of nine matches and sits at the bottom with just four points. Their net run rate is the worst in the tournament at -1.302.
While Dhoni has still shown flashes of his famous finishing skills, his overall numbers have been modest. In nine innings so far, he has scored 140 runs at an average of 28.00 and a strike rate of 142.85. His best knock came against LSG when he hammered 26 runs off just 11 balls.
Playoff Hopes Still Alive, But Slim
Despite sitting at the bottom, CSK is not fully out of the playoff race yet. For them to make it, they must win all five of their remaining games. That would take them to 14 points, which has been enough in past seasons to qualify. However, they will also need to massively improve their net run rate and hope for favourable results from other matches.
