Abhishek Nayar Takes Over As Head Coach Of UP Warriorz For WPL 2026
Abhishek Nayar replaces Jon Lewis as UP Warriorz head coach ahead of WPL 2026; Deepti Sharma named new captain.
In a major coaching shake-up ahead of WPL 2026, UP Warriorz have appointed former India all-rounder and seasoned coach Abhishek Nayar as their new head coach. He replaces Jon Lewis, who led the team for three years but failed to deliver a title.
The franchise also confirmed that Deepti Sharma will lead the side this season, with former captain Alyssa Healy ruled out due to injury.
Nayar Brings Strong Coaching Pedigree
Abhishek Nayar, 40, has grown in reputation as a coach over the years. Though he only played three ODIs for India, his influence in domestic and franchise cricket has been significant.
He played a vital role in shaping young Indian talent as part of Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) support staff from 2018 to 2024. His efforts were rewarded in 2024 when KKR lifted the IPL trophy under his mentorship.
Nayar also worked with Gautam Gambhir in the Indian team setup, helping them win the Champions Trophy, before returning to KKR in 2025.
He has international coaching experience as well, having led Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League in 2022.
Warriorz Looking For Turnaround
UP Warriorz have had a quiet run in the WPL so far. Last season, they finished fifth on the table, managing just three wins from eight matches.
With a new Indian core led by Deepti Sharma and an experienced mind like Nayar in the dressing room, the Warriorz are hoping for a serious turnaround. The 2026 WPL season is expected to start in February.
