23 Sixes in England, Rishabh Pant Breaks Ben Stokes’ Elite Six-Hitting Record

Rishabh Pant smashes record for most Test sixes in a country, beating Ben Stokes with 23 sixes in England.

Rishabh Pant just did something no Test batter has ever done before, hit 23 sixes in a single country. The record-breaking moment came on July 5 during India’s second innings at Edgbaston.

Facing Josh Tongue, Pant launched a massive slog sweep that flew into the stands. With that hit, he overtook Ben Stokes’ tally of 21 sixes in South Africa, the previous record for the most sixes by any batter in one country in Test history.

Pant now has 23 sixes in England, more than anyone else in a single country. The next best are Stokes (21 in South Africa), Matthew Hayden (19 in India), Harry Brook (16 in New Zealand), and even the great Vivian Richards (16 in England).

Most sixes for a visiting batter in away country in Tests:

  • 23* – Rishabh Pant in England
  • 21 – Ben Stokes in South Africa
  • 19 – Matthew Hayden in India
  • 16 – Harry Brook in New Zealand

Pant closing in on Gilchrist, Dhoni

This wasn’t just about one record. Pant also continued climbing the charts for wicketkeeper-batters in away Tests.

With 51 sixes in overseas matches, he’s now second only to Adam Gilchrist, who hit 56. MS Dhoni, by comparison, had 37 sixes away from home.

Out of Pant’s 85 sixes in Test cricket, 51 have come outside India, proving once again why he’s one of the most dangerous players in the world in away conditions.

Most Sixes for Wicket-keeper batter in away Tests:

  • 56 – Adam Gilchrist
  • 51* – Rishabh Pant
  • 37 – MS Dhoni

He’s now just 15 sixes away from breaking the all-time sixes record for a keeper-batter in Test cricket. That mark, held by Gilchrist, stands at 100. And knowing Pant, he won’t take too long to get there.
