The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made an announcement on Monday, August 21, unveiling the 17-player squad for the upcoming Asia Cup in 2023. Sanju Samson was named as the travel backup, while the veteran leg spinner, Yuzvendra Chahal, was not included in the team.
Meanwhile, at the press conference, Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar shed light on the rationale behind Yuzvendra Chahal’s omission. He pointed out that the selection process allowed for just one leading spinner, either Kuldeep Yadav or Yuzvendra Chahal, and they opted for the former due to his strong performances in recent ODIs.
“Terrific performer but we had to look at the balance of the team. To fit in two wrist spinners was difficult,” said Agarkar in the press-conference.
