IPL 2023: Mayank Agarwal Overlooked as Sunrisers Hyderabad Name Captain
There were speculations that Mayank Agarwal might be named captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Sunrisers Hyderabad, on Thursday February 23 named South Africa batter Aiden Markram as their captain for the 16th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Markram has achieved remarkable success with the Sunrisers Hyderabad’s sister franchise Sunrisers Eastern Cape as a captain, leading them to victory in the inaugural SA 20 tournament, defeating Pretoria Capitals.
Markram’s batting prowess was on full display throughout the SA20 league, where he scored 366 runs from 12 matches at an average of 33.27, with one hundred and one fifty to his name.
The Kaviya Maran-owned SRH franchise made the announcement on their social media account on Thursday (February 23) morning.
The 29-year-old will now take over from Kane Williamson, who was released by the franchise and went on to join defending champions Gujarat Titans during the IPL 2023 auction.
Markram had a successful run with SRH in the 15th edition of IPL, scoring 381 runs in 12 innings at an impressive strike rate of 139.05, averaging 47.62. He smacked three fifties in the season.
While there were rumours that Mayank Agarwal, acquired for INR 8.5 crore by SRH, might be a front line contender for the role, Markram emerged as the victor over the former Punjab Kings batter.
Sunrisers Hyderabad will kick off their IPL campaign with a match against the Rajasthan Royals on April 2nd.
