The Bazball Era Enters a New Chapter with Joe Root as England Captain

Joe Root has made it clear that England will not move away from BazBall after replacing the retired Ben Stokes as the team’s Test captain. Instead, Root wants to build on the progress made over the last four years while making a few changes to help England compete consistently against the world’s best teams.

Root will begin his second spell as England’s Test captain in the upcoming series against Pakistan. His return comes after Stokes stepped down from the role following a successful period that transformed England’s approach to Test cricket.

BazBall, introduced in 2022 under Ben Stokes and former Test head coach Brendon McCullum, changed England’s style with aggressive batting and positive cricket. The approach brought impressive results, with England winning 27 of their 48 Tests since its introduction.

Stokes enjoyed a remarkable run as captain, leading England to 24 wins in 43 Tests. In contrast, Root’s first stint as captain was far less successful, with England suffering 27 defeats in 65 matches.

Despite that difference, Root believes abandoning BazBall would be a mistake.

“It’ll be trying to continue some of the good things we have done over that period (since 2022) and not finding ourselves back to where we were before Baz and Ben took over,” Root said.

He added that England’s focus should be on improving rather than starting from scratch.

“Evolving and tweaking things to get us to where we want to be and really competing against the top nations consistently over a long period of time. The wrong thing to do would be to completely rip everything up that we’ve done over the last four years. There’s so much good stuff that Ben and Brendon did and changed the way we look at the game and see the game.”

England also face a change in the coaching setup later this year, with Stephen Fleming set to replace Brendon McCullum as Test head coach. Fleming has not yet confirmed whether he will fully retain the BazBall philosophy and is widely seen as a more conservative coach.

Even so, Root’s comments suggest England’s attacking mindset will remain at the heart of the team’s Test cricket, with only measured adjustments rather than a complete overhaul.
