Litton Das Named Bangladesh’s New ODI Captain as BCB Adopts Two-Captain System

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed Litton Das as the new ODI captain, ending Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s short stint in the role. Litton will now lead Bangladesh in both white-ball formats, while Najmul Hossain Shanto will continue as the Test captain.
The move is part of the BCB’s new leadership structure, which replaces the previous three-captain model with a two-captain system. Towhid Hridoy has also been named the vice-captain for white-ball cricket.
The decision was discussed with the players and coaching staff before being finalised. According to the board, having one captain for white-ball cricket and another for red-ball cricket will provide better planning and long-term continuity.
“We had three captains across the three formats. I believe, and the board also believes, that having two captains is the right way forward.”
“There is nothing right or wrong about either approach, but we feel two captains make more sense, one for white-ball cricket and one for red-ball cricket.”
Despite leading Bangladesh to victories in four of his last five ODI series, Mehidy has been relieved of the ODI captaincy. The BCB said it wants the all-rounder to focus fully on his performances with both bat and ball.
“Miraz (Mehidy) has been a highly successful captain. He won four of the last five series he led. But I believe we need Miraz more as a cricketer than as a captain.”
“I’ve made it clear that we value him more as a cricketer.”
The board also pointed to Litton’s previous success as captain. He led Bangladesh to a memorable 2-1 ODI series win over India in 2022, and the BCB hopes he can bring stability to the side in the coming years.
The board stressed the importance of coordination between the two captains as Bangladesh enters a new phase.
“There needs to be alignment between the white-ball and red-ball captains.”
The BCB also confirmed that players and support staff will now be reviewed every six months as part of a broader effort to improve accountability and communication.
“Once Miraz gets back to his full rhythm, Bangladesh will win a lot of matches.”
“We need to bridge the gap that has existed between the board and the players.”
