ECB Blocks Plan to Host Euro Nations Cup Final at Lord’s

ECB blocks plans to host the Euro Nations Cup final at Lord's, forcing organisers to find a new venue outside England for 2027.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has blocked plans to stage the final of the proposed Euro Nations Cup at Lord’s Cricket Ground, dealing a major setback to organisers hoping to launch the new tournament in 2027.

The ECB refused to sign the mandatory staging agreement needed for the international T20 event to be held in England. Without the board’s approval, the competition cannot take place within its jurisdiction.

ECB chief executive Richard Gould said the decision was driven by an already packed international schedule. He also raised concerns that English county clubs could react negatively if international matches clashed with the domestic season.

The move comes despite strong backing from the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). The MCC had supported the idea of growing cricket across Europe and had offered to host matches at Lord’s, along with its partner ground at Wormsley.

The Euro Nations Cup is being developed as an annual men’s and women’s T20 tournament by the cricket boards of Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands. The competition is aimed at giving European teams more regular international cricket and helping the sport grow across the region.

Organisers had hoped to launch the inaugural edition in early summer 2027, with the final at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground. However, the ECB’s decision has forced them to look for alternative venues outside England.

The organisers are now expected to continue discussions with other potential hosts as they work to keep the planned 2027 launch on track. While losing Lord’s is a setback, the project remains focused on creating a new European T20 competition for both men’s and women’s cricket.
