Report Raises Questions Over Rohit Sharma’s Fitness Ahead of 2027 ODI World Cup
Report claims Rohit Sharma has a Grade 3 hamstring tear, but no official confirmation has been issued by the BCCI or the player.
India captain Rohit Sharma could face a major fitness challenge ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup, according to a report that claims he has suffered a 16-mm Grade 3 hamstring tear. However, neither the Board of Control for Cricket in India nor Rohit has officially confirmed the injury.
The report, which cites CricBlogger, states that Rohit is dealing with a Grade 3 hamstring tear, the most serious type of hamstring injury. Such injuries involve a complete tear or rupture of the muscle or tendon and can lead to a significant loss of function.
“A grade 3 hamstring tear is the most severe form of hamstring injury. It indicates a complete tear or rupture of the hamstring muscle or tendon, resulting in a significant loss of function.”
If the reported diagnosis is accurate, recovery could take anywhere from three to six months or even longer. In some cases, surgery may be required, followed by a lengthy rehabilitation process and careful fitness monitoring before a player can return to competitive cricket.
The report has also raised concerns about Rohit’s long-term ODI future. Having already retired from Test and T20I cricket, the 39-year-old is focused solely on the 50-over format. A prolonged recovery period could make his road to the 2027 ODI World Cup much tougher, though the tournament remains more than a year away and he has not been ruled out.
According to the report, Rohit has managed hamstring issues on and off since the 2017-18 season. It also claims that the same problem forced him to miss some matches during IPL 2026. Hamstring injuries are known to have a risk of recurrence, particularly for athletes returning from severe tears.
Despite the concerns, the article itself urged caution against jumping to conclusions. It noted that Rohit has dealt with similar fitness challenges over the years and has continued to perform at the highest level.
“There won’t be any problem whatsoever,” a source close to Rohit said.
Away from the field, Rohit recently expanded his business interests by becoming an investor and equity partner in FITTR. While the reported injury has sparked discussion about his cricketing future, there remains no official medical update from either the player or the BCCI.
Until a formal statement is issued, the reported hamstring tear should be viewed as an unconfirmed claim rather than a confirmed medical diagnosis.
