Suryakumar Yadav Likely to Lose T20I Captaincy After T20 World Cup 2026
Suryakumar Yadav may lose India’s T20I captaincy after the 2026 World Cup, with Shubman Gill leading the race to replace him.
Suryakumar Yadav is likely to be removed as India’s T20I captain after the 2026 T20 World Cup, with Shubman Gill emerging as the frontrunner to take over and lead across formats.
Selectors had discussed a captaincy change earlier this year but chose to delay the move. They did not want to disrupt the team so close to a World Cup, especially with India trying to defend their title at home.
Suryakumar’s prolonged dip in form has become a major concern. In 2025, he scored just 218 runs in 21 T20I matches at an average of 13.62, and he has not hit a fifty since 2024.
At 35, Suryakumar is also seen as nearing the end of his T20I cycle. The BCCI prefers to hand leadership to a younger player who can be part of a longer-term plan beyond the next World Cup.
Gill, who is currently the vice-captain, is the leading choice to replace him. However, his own form has come under scrutiny after he managed only 32 runs in the recent T20I series in South Africa.
Gill’s struggles mean he will need strong performances over the next few months to fully secure the captaincy. The selectors want their next T20I leader to be a guaranteed starter, not someone fighting for form.
Sanju Samson has also added to the selection headache. He scored a quick 37 off 21 balls in the fifth T20I against South Africa after Gill was ruled out with an injury, keeping the competition for batting spots alive.
India’s squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup is set to be announced on December 20 from the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar and Suryakumar are expected to address the media.
The announcement is likely to offer more clarity on India’s future leadership plans. While Suryakumar may lead at the World Cup, all signs point to a transition soon after, with Gill currently at the front of the race.
