Ashes 2025-26: Why Glenn McGrath Removed from ABC Commentary Panel?

ABC drops Glenn McGrath from Ashes commentary due to Bet365 deal, sparking fresh debate on gambling links in cricket.

ABC has decided to drop Glenn McGrath from its commentary team for the upcoming Ashes series in Australia. The decision comes after McGrath entered a commercial partnership with betting company Bet365, which goes against ABC’s strict rules on gambling affiliations.

McGrath’s management had alerted ABC about the deal almost a month before the Ashes. Even with the early notice, the broadcaster stayed firm on its policy. His name was on the roster until last week, but it was removed once both sides agreed to part ways. An ABC spokesperson said, “Following the discussions, the two parties mutually parted ways, as confirmed by an ABC spokesperson.”

This move is not new for the broadcaster. In 2022, Mitchell Johnson was also dropped for similar ties to betting brands. The growing concern around gambling links in cricket has led broadcasters to take tougher stances.

The issue has also been discussed widely by players. Many are unhappy with the rising number of betting ads and sponsorships, especially during major events. Usman Khawaja recently voiced his frustration, saying the government was not acting fast enough to control gambling promotions.

ABC added that they still value McGrath and may work with him again. “The spokesperson also revealed that while he will not be part of the commentary team, the network is open to working with him in the future and expects to see him around the grounds during the series.”

The presence of Bet365, a Cricket Australia gold partner, in Ashes broadcasts has already sparked debates among fans and experts. Many feel the branding is becoming too common in cricket coverage.

Tom Moody will step in for McGrath during the first Test in Perth. He joins the rest of the panel as ABC prepares for another big summer of cricket.
