Rutherford has grown into an impactful middle-order batter in T20 cricket. He has played 44 T20Is for West Indies and also holds the record for the highest sixth-wicket stand in T20Is. He scored 139 runs with Andre Russell against Australia in Perth, a partnership that showed his finishing ability.

He has been part of the IPL for a while and has turned out for Delhi Capitals in 2019 and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2022. He was also on the rosters of Mumbai Indians in 2020 and Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024 but did not get a game in those seasons.

His best IPL run came with Gujarat Titans last year. Rutherford scored 291 runs in 11 innings in IPL 2025. He averaged 32.33 and struck at 157.29, often lifting GT in the final overs. These numbers made him a strong trade target for MI, who want more power in the middle order.

The move comes just days after Mumbai traded in Shardul Thakur from Lucknow Super Giants for INR 2 crore. With two experienced all-rounders joining the squad, MI are clearly preparing for a deeper run in IPL 2026.

The trade window will close on November 15 at 5 PM. Teams are expected to retain most of their core players, and the mini-auction on December 27 will help them fill the remaining gaps. Mumbai want stability after a mixed 2025 season, and these early moves show the direction they are heading in.

Rutherford’s addition gives MI another explosive finisher and a handy part-time bowling option. The team now looks stronger in the lower-middle order, a phase that troubled them at times last season.
