Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli Confirm 2027 World Cup Participation After Sydney ODI
The veteran duo revealed their plans during a light-hearted chat with Adam Gilchrist post-match
India ended the ODI series in style, defeating Australia by nine wickets in the third match at the Sydney Cricket Ground under Shubman Gill’s captaincy. The victory helped India avoid a 3-0 whitewash, thanks to the brilliance of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
The veteran duo rolled back the years, putting on an unbeaten 168-run stand that guided India to a smooth chase of 237 in just 38.3 overs. Rohit led the way with a fluent 121 off 125 balls, while Kohli stayed unbeaten on 74. Their partnership not only sealed the win but also silenced critics questioning their age and form Rohit will soon turn 39, and Kohli 38 next month.
Rohit’s consistency across the series earned him both Player of the Match and Player of the Series awards, finishing with 202 runs at an average of 101. His return to form after a long break has been a huge boost for the side as India look to rebuild under young leadership.
After the match, both Rohit and Kohli joined Adam Gilchrist and Ravi Shastri for a light-hearted chat. Gilchrist wished them luck for the 2027 World Cup, but neither confirmed their participation. Instead, they smiled and thanked fans for their continued support.
Kohli, visibly emotional, expressed his love for playing in Australia. “We want to say thank you as well. We’ve loved coming to this country and playing in front of such big crowds. And yeah, we’ve played some of our best cricket here as well. So, thank you very much for welcoming us so well. You guys are brilliant. We’ve never felt short of support here,” he said.
Gilchrist added, “I think, for the Australian crowds and audiences, we thank you. It’s been a real pleasure to have you on our shores. We wish you all the best in the pursuit of the 2027 World Cup.”
