“West Indian cricket doesn’t need world cricket” – Gautam Gambhir
Gautam Gambhir tells West Indies players world cricket needs them, praises their spirit after India’s Test win.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir walked into the West Indies dressing room moments after calling them “inexperienced” in the post-match press conference.
The two-match Test series had just ended in Delhi with India sealing a 2-0 victory, but Gambhir’s message inside the visiting camp was far from critical.
The former India opener, invited by Windies coach Daren Sammy, spoke to the players for a few minutes after the game.
His tone was honest yet encouraging, as he urged them to take pride in their cricket and reminded them of their importance to the sport.
“It’s always a privilege to play against West Indies,” Gambhir told the players. “Your humility and the way you carry yourselves is something every team can learn from. West Indian cricket doesn’t need world cricket. World cricket needs West Indian cricket.”
His message came just minutes after he had told reporters that the Windies were “an inexperienced team” still finding their rhythm.
Yet, Gambhir admired how they fought back in the second Test, pushing the match into the final day after being forced to follow on.
John Campbell and Shai Hope scored fine hundreds, while Justin Greaves and Jayden Seales added crucial runs to delay India’s win.
Sammy said he wanted his players to hear from someone who knows what it takes to succeed at the top level. “Sometimes you just need to hear another voice,” the West Indies coach said while introducing Gambhir to the squad.
In his short speech, Gambhir reminded them that the true spirit of team sport lies in valuing every effort, not just big scores or wickets.
“It’s the small contributions that make a team,” he said. “That’s how you build something lasting.”
For a team searching for stability and identity, Gambhir’s heartfelt words were more than motivation, they were respect, straight from a rival camp.
