Mitchell Starc Retires from T20Is Just Before World Cup 2026, Here’s Why
Mitchell Starc retires from T20Is six months before World Cup, prioritising Test cricket and 2027 ODI World Cup.
Australia have been dealt a big blow ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, as left-arm pace spearhead Mitchell Starc has announced his retirement from international T20 cricket.
The 35-year-old steps away from the shortest format with just six months left for the marquee event, leaving the Aussies searching for a replacement for one of their most prolific T20I bowlers.
Starc bows out of T20Is with 79 wickets in 65 matches since debuting in 2012. He played a key role in Australia’s historic maiden T20 World Cup triumph in 2021, when Aaron Finch’s men defeated New Zealand in the final.
Explaining his decision, Starc stressed that his focus remains on Test cricket and the longer future ahead, including the 2027 ODI World Cup.
“Test cricket is and has always been my highest priority. I have loved every minute of every T20 game I have played for Australia, particularly the 2021 World Cup, not just because we won but for the incredible group and the fun along the way,” Starc said.
“Looking ahead to an away Indian Test tour, the Ashes and an ODI World Cup in 2027, I feel this is my best way forward to remain fresh, fit and at my best for those campaigns. It also gives the bowling group time to prepare for the T20 World Cup in the matches leading into that tournament,” he added.
Australia’s chief selector George Bailey lauded the fast bowler’s contribution, saying his ability to change games with wickets was second to none.
