The 25-year-old was part of the squad for the full series but did not get his break. He missed the first three Tests, then was ruled out of the fourth after hurting his thumb in the nets. By the time he recovered for the fifth Test, he was not picked in the playing XI.

Punjab bowling coach Gagandeep Singh revealed that the young pacer found the experience tough.

“I genuinely believed he deserved a chance in England. A few months ago, when he was there, we spoke, and he expressed feeling restless and Impatient about not being given an opportunity in the Test team. I told him, ‘You need to be patient and wait for your moment,” Gagandeep told reporters.

Despite the setback, the coach is confident Arshdeep has the tools to succeed in the longer format.

“Test cricket is unique as it challenges your skills and temperament in a way that no other format can. However, I am confident that his skill set is well-suited for red-ball cricket as well, especially considering his height, natural ability to swing the ball, and enhanced control.,” Gagandeep said.

Arshdeep has been a steady performer in the domestic circuit. In 21 first-class matches, he has taken 66 wickets at an average of 30.37 and a strike rate of 56.9. His best figures are 6 for 40, and he already has two five-wicket hauls to his name.

India went on to draw the series 2-2, clinching a thrilling six-run win at The Oval in the final Test. While Arshdeep’s debut did not come, the future still looks bright.

His next chance to impress will be in the Duleep Trophy starting August 28, where he will represent North Zone under the captaincy of Shubman Gill. Strong performances there could bring him back into the national discussion.
