“Captaining and winning championships with the Mumbai team has been an absolute honour. With a new domestic season ahead, I believe it’s the right time to groom a new leader, and hence I’ve decided not to continue in the captaincy role. I remain fully committed to giving my best as a player and will continue my journey with Mumbai Cricket Association to help us win more trophies,” Rahane wrote on X.

Under Rahane’s leadership, Mumbai clinched its 42nd Ranji Trophy title in 2023/24 after a seven-year gap and followed it up with an Irani Trophy win in 2024/25. He scored 467 runs across 14 innings last season, including a century and a fifty.

Thakur’s appointment was widely expected, especially after he captained West Zone in the Duleep Trophy. The selectors also consulted Rahane before finalising the decision.

The all-rounder has been instrumental in Mumbai’s recent success, contributing with both bat and ball. In the 2023/24 Ranji season, Thakur scored 505 runs with a century and picked up 35 wickets in nine matches.
