The much-awaited T20 Champions League is all set to return in September 2026. The decision was finalised during the ICC’s annual conference in Singapore, where top member nations gave the green signal for the relaunch of the tournament, which was last played over a decade ago.
Originally launched in 2008, the Champions League had a short run before being scrapped in 2014 due to financial losses. But now, with the rapid growth of franchise cricket around the world, the ICC is ready to bring it back with fresh energy and global interest.
Franchise Explosion Behind the Comeback
Since 2014, the T20 circuit has exploded across continents. Leagues like the IPL, BBL, PSL, SA20, ILT20, and MLC have gained massive popularity. Top players are now part of multiple franchises across the globe, playing in as many as four or five leagues a year.
With this global rise, cricket bodies have pushed for a top-tier Champions League to bring the best clubs under one roof again.
The original version was backed by India, Australia, and South Africa, and helped fund the early days of the Big Bash League. However, the revival will come with challenges. Chief among them: which franchise will a player represent if two of his teams qualify? That’s one of the big questions the ICC will need to address before finalising the format.
Saudi Arabia Could Play Host
There’s also a possibility that Saudi Arabia could become a key partner or even host of the new T20 Champions League. The Kingdom has shown interest in global cricket ventures and could provide financial muscle to make the league a blockbuster.
No Word Yet on Prize Money or Format
So far, the ICC has not revealed how the finances will be split among participating teams or boards. However, with all major cricketing nations aligned on the return of the Champions League, fans can expect more clarity soon.
