Shubman Gill produced a record-breaking knock in Guwahati as India chased down 406 against West Indies in the second ODI to win by eight wickets and take an unassailable 2-0 lead.
Gill remained unbeaten on 223 off just 133 balls, reaching his double century in 117 balls. His innings included a series of powerful strokes and became one of the fastest double centuries in ODI and List A cricket.
The India captain also created history with his landmark innings. Gill became the first cricketer to score a double century as captain in both Test and ODI cricket.
His 223* also moved him past Virender Sehwag’s previous record of 219 for the highest individual ODI score by a captain. Gill’s knock came at a crucial time as India faced a huge target of 406 runs.
Gill shared a massive 255-run opening partnership with Rohit Sharma, who scored a century of his own. Rohit’s 101 gave India a flying start and allowed Gill to continue his attack from the other end.
India completed the chase in just 43.3 overs, reaching 406 for two. The eight-wicket win gave India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.
Gill’s double century also added another major achievement to his growing list of records. His unbeaten 223 now stands as one of the biggest individual scores in ODI cricket and the highest by an ODI captain.
