Virat Kohli Joins Sachin Tendulkar in Elite 15,000 ODI Runs Club
Virat Kohli becomes only the second batter to score 15,000 ODI runs, reaching the milestone against West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram.
Virat Kohli reached another huge milestone in ODI cricket during India’s first ODI against West Indies at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram.
Kohli became only the second batter in cricket history to score 15,000 ODI runs, joining the legendary Sachin Tendulkar in the elite club.
The former India captain needed 59 runs before the match to reach the landmark. He completed it in the 29th over by hitting two successive boundaries off Alzarri Joseph.
Kohli reached 15,000 ODI runs in his 315th match and 303rd innings. He faced 15,950 balls to get to the mark, while Tendulkar took 377 innings and 17,528 balls.
The 15,000-run milestone came 6,614 days after Kohli made his ODI debut. Tendulkar reached the mark in 6,402 days, meaning Kohli took more calendar days despite getting there in fewer innings and balls.
Kohli’s latest achievement also moved him further clear in the all-time ODI run-scoring list. He is now second behind Tendulkar, with Kumar Sangakkara below him on the list.
The landmark adds to Kohli’s remarkable ODI record. He already holds the record for the most centuries in men’s ODI cricket, with 54 hundreds to his name.
The milestone came while India were chasing 296 against West Indies in the opening game of the three-match ODI series. Kohli’s presence at the crease added another major moment to an already memorable match at the Greenfield Stadium.
