Mumbai Indians Appoint Luke Williams as Head Coach for WPL 2027

Mumbai Indians (MI) have appointed Luke Williams as their new head coach for the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2027 season. He replaces Lisa Keightley, who has left the role to become Cricket Australia’s national development lead.

Williams brings a strong record in women’s cricket, having guided Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to the WPL 2024 title. He also won back-to-back Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) titles with Adelaide Strikers in 2022 and 2023.

The Australian coach was also part of the Southern Brave support staff as an assistant coach when the team won The Hundred in 2023. He is currently working as an assistant coach with the England women’s cricket team.

“I’m really excited to be joining Mumbai Indians, a respected and successful organisation, and working with this talented group of players and support staff. We have a great opportunity to build something together, play an exciting brand of cricket and compete for success,” Williams said.

His appointment comes after a difficult WPL 2026 campaign for Mumbai Indians. The team finished fourth in the points table with three wins from eight matches, missing the playoffs for the first time in the tournament’s history.

MI will now look to return to the playoffs under Williams, who has already experienced success in the competition with RCB. Mumbai Indians remain one of the joint-most successful franchises in the WPL, alongside RCB, with two titles each.

Keightley, meanwhile, will continue as head coach of Sydney Thunder while taking up her new responsibilities with Cricket Australia.
