Mahela Jayawardene Steps Down as Mumbai Indians Head Coach Ahead of IPL 2027

Mahela Jayawardene has stepped down as the head coach of Mumbai Indians ahead of the IPL 2027 season. The decision came after mutual agreement between the Sri Lankan great and the franchise’s ownership group, with both sides looking for a fresh start.

Jayawardene has been part of the Mumbai Indians setup for over a decade. He first joined the franchise in 2017 and helped them win the IPL title in his debut season as head coach.

Under his leadership, Mumbai Indians also won the IPL titles in 2019 and 2020. The team became one of the most successful sides in the tournament during that period.

In 2022, Jayawardene moved into the role of Global Head of Performance at Mumbai Indians. He returned for a second stint as head coach in 2024, taking charge of the team once again.

In his statement, Jayawardene spoke warmly about his time with the franchise and thanked the players, coaching staff and fans for their support.

“Mumbai Indians has been a very special part of my journey for over a decade now. The players, coaching team, the incredible support of the #OneFamily and above all the fans have made this an experience I will always treasure.”

Mumbai Indians are now searching for a new head coach ahead of the next season. According to a report by The Times of India, the franchise has shortlisted several candidates, with interviews expected to take place in the coming week.

Unlike his previous move away from the head coach role, Jayawardene is unlikely to continue with the franchise in another position this time.

The coaching change comes after a difficult period for the five-time IPL champions. Mumbai Indians last won the title in 2020 and have gone six years without lifting the trophy.

The Hardik Pandya-led side also endured a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign, finishing ninth in the standings. The result has pushed the management to consider major changes as the franchise looks to return to winning ways.

Mumbai Indians will now aim to appoint a coach who can help rebuild the team and bring them back into the title race in IPL 2027.
