IND vs SL 2026: Manav Suthar Breaks Multiple Records With 10-Wicket Haul Against Sri Lanka
Manav Suthar takes 10 wickets in Galle, breaking multiple Indian Test records during India's 165-run win over Sri Lanka.
Manav Suthar produced a record-breaking performance in the first Test against Sri Lanka, taking 10 wickets in the match as India won by 165 runs in Galle. The 24-year-old spinner became one of the youngest Indian bowlers to achieve the feat away from home.
Suthar is now the seventh Indian spinner to take a 10-wicket match haul in an away Test. The list includes Ravichandran Ashwin, Bishan Singh Bedi, Erapalli Prasanna, Bhagwat Chandrasekhar, Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh.
What makes Suthar’s achievement even more special is his age. At 24 years and 16 days, he is the only Indian spinner on that list to take a 10-wicket haul away from home before turning 28.
Suthar Earns a Place Among the Elite
Suthar’s 10-wicket match haul also puts him among a select group of Indian bowlers to achieve the feat against Sri Lanka. Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh have taken two 10-wicket hauls against Sri Lanka, while Maninder Singh, Venkatapathy Raju, Ravichandran Ashwin and Suthar have done it once each.
Interestingly, three of India’s eight 10-wicket hauls against Sri Lanka have come in Galle, showing how important spin has been at the venue.
Suthar also matched a rare record for India by taking his maiden 10-wicket haul in only his second Test. Only Narendra Hirwani, Laxman Sivaramakrishnan and Axar Patel have reached the milestone in as few matches.
Hirwani remains the fastest, taking 16 wickets on his Test debut against the West Indies in Chennai in 1988. Suthar’s achievement puts him alongside Sivaramakrishnan and Axar, who also needed only two Tests.
The left-arm spinner has now taken multiple five-wicket hauls in his first two Tests for India. Only Narendra Hirwani and Axar Patel, with three each, have more in their opening two matches, while Suthar joins Sivaramakrishnan and Mohammad Nissar with two.
Suthar’s performance in Galle has therefore been more than just a match-winning spell. It has placed the young spinner among some of India’s greatest names in Test cricket and given him a remarkable start to his international career.
