ENG vs SL 2nd ODI: Kusal Mendis Surpasses Sanath Jayasuriya With Record-Breaking Ton

Kusal Mendis produced a superb century against England in the second ODI at Headingley, scoring 121 off 100 balls to help Sri Lanka reach 321/6 in their 50 overs.

The Sri Lankan captain led from the front in a must-win match for his team, giving them a strong total as they looked to turn around their tour of England.

Mendis reached his century in just 82 balls, matching Upul Tharanga for the fourth-fastest ODI hundred by a Sri Lankan batter against England. His knock also broke Sanath Jayasuriya’s record for the highest ODI score by a Sri Lankan captain at Leeds. Jayasuriya had scored 112 off 87 balls in 2002.

The 321/6 total was Sri Lanka’s third-highest score in ODIs against England. Kamindu Mendis added 54 runs, while Pavan Rathnayake chipped in with 48 to keep the innings moving after the captain’s big contribution.

Sri Lanka came into the match after losing the first ODI by 89 runs at Chester-le-Street and suffering a 3-0 T20I series defeat. Mendis and his team were looking to level the ODI series and claim their first win of the tour.

England needed 322 runs to win the second ODI and take a 2-0 lead in the three-match series. The final match is scheduled to be played at The Oval on Sunday.
