Dean Elgar Confirms Retirement Plans After 2026 Cricket Season
Dean Elgar will retire after the 2026 season following a 21-year career and 5,347 Test runs for South Africa.
Former South Africa Test captain Dean Elgar has announced that he will retire from all professional cricket at the end of the 2026 season.
The 39-year-old will bring the curtain down on a 21-year professional career that included 86 Tests for South Africa and more than 5,300 Test runs.
Elgar scored 5,347 runs in Tests at an average of 37.65, with 14 centuries and 23 fifties. He was known for his tough batting style and ability to spend long hours at the crease.
After retiring from international cricket, Elgar continued playing county cricket for Essex. He joined the English club in 2024 and remains an important part of the team.
Explaining his decision, Elgar said he wants to spend more time with his partner and children after spending much of his career travelling with cricket.
“I feel it’s the right time for me now. I’m not getting any younger, 39 years old, and I’ve got a lot of things going on back home with regards to a young but growing-up-very-quickly family,” Elgar said.
Elgar also looked back proudly on his time as South Africa’s Test captain. He took charge when the team were seventh in the ICC World Test Championship rankings and helped them rise to second.
One of his biggest achievements as captain was South Africa’s Test win over England at Lord’s. Elgar said the victory stood out because of the way his team played.
“I was fortunate enough to represent my country for twelve years and then the responsibility of captaining South Africa, that’s one of the proudest moments of my career,” he said.
Elgar now plans to take a break from cricket after retirement. He said being present for his children has become his priority after spending so many years on the road.
“I’d ideally have a sabbatical from cricket. It’s been a long journey, and I’ve been on the road for quite a long time,” he said.
Essex Director of Cricket Chris Silverwood praised Elgar for his longevity, resilience and commitment. He also credited the veteran opener for helping develop younger players at the club.
Elgar hopes to be remembered as a hard-working cricketer who played to win while respecting the opposition.
“I’d hope people would remember me for playing the game hard and to win,” he said.
