Three Times When Players Were Given Out for Obstructing the Field in IPL History

A total of three times players have been given out for obstructing the field in the IPL history.

The Indian Premier League (IPL), since its inception in 2008, has been one of the most exciting tournaments in world cricket. The cash-rich league has seen many incredible moments getting unfolded, including some truly rare dismissals.

One such dismissal is obstructing the field, where the batter deliberately stops the ball from hitting the stumps. This mode of dismissal is uncommon even in international cricket, and in the IPL’s 17-year history, only three batters have fallen victim to it.

In that note, let’s take a look at the three instances in IPL history where players were dismissed for obstructing the field:

Yusuf Pathan (2013)

The first instance of obstructing the field in the IPL took place in 2013 during a match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Pune Warriors India in Ranchi. Chasing a target of 171 runs, KKR looked well on their way with Yusuf Pathan blazing at 72 off 44 balls. However, the momentum shifted in Ranchi’s favour in the 18th over when Yusuf Pathan was dismissed for obstructing the field. Ultimately, KKR lost the game by 7 runs.

Amit Mishra (2019)

The second instance came in 2019 during a clash between Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad in Vizag. This time, it was Amit Mishra who was dismissed for obstructing the field while chasing a target of 163 runs set by SRH. While the dismissal came in the fourth ball of the final over with DC needing just 3 runs, Shimron Hetmyer’s boundary off the last ball sealed a dramatic two-wicket victory for Delhi despite Amit Mishra’s unusual dismissal.

Ravindra Jadeja (2024)

The most recent instance of obstructing the field happened in the ongoing 2024 season during a match between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Ravindra Jadeja was attempting a risky second run while his partner Ruturaj Gaikwad refused the run, and the CSK all-rounder found himself in a tight spot.

In a desperate attempt to avoid a run-out, he changed his direction and came in the line of the throw from Rajasthan wicket-keeper Sanju Samson. Fortunately for CSK, they went on to win the match by five wickets.
