“Winning Test Series in SENA is Bigger Than Winning IPL” – Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill picks England Test glory over IPL, eyes historic series win as India’s new red-ball captain in 2025

Shubman Gill is set to begin his first big challenge as India’s Test captain when the team takes on England in the first Test at Headingley, Leeds on June 20.

Speaking to the media ahead of the match, Gill showed maturity and clarity in his responses, especially when asked about his goals as a leader.

Shubman Gill Prefers Test Series Win Over IPL Glory

During the press conference, a reporter asked Gill a difficult question whether he would choose winning the IPL or a five-match Test series in England.

Gill didn’t take time to answer and said, “Definitely the Test series, in my opinion. You don’t get many chances as a captain to come to England. Maybe two, or if you’re the best of your generation, maybe three. But IPL comes every year, you get a crack at it every year. So winning in SENA countries is bigger.”

Gill Confident Ahead of England Challenge

The last time India won a Test series in England was way back in 2007. It has been 18 long years since then, and the new-look Indian side under Gill’s captaincy is hoping to break the streak.

When asked about the kind of cricket India will play under the Gill-Gambhir leadership, he kept his plans under wraps.

“Let the world see by the end of August,” he said, showing quiet confidence.

IPL Success Already In His Bag

While Gill has picked Test success over IPL, it’s not to say he hasn’t achieved much in T20 cricket. He won his first IPL title with Gujarat Titans in 2022, which was also the franchise’s debut season. Gill played a major role in that title win and was one of the top performers.

As the series against England begins, all eyes will be on Shubman Gill not just as a batter but as the captain shaping India’s future in Test cricket.
