“Will Never Give Up”: Ajinkya Rahane Eyes Test Return in Indian Team After Year-Long Gap

Ajinkya Rahane hopes to play Test cricket again, says the hunger to represent India in whites is still alive.

Ajinkya Rahane hasn’t worn the Indian whites in over a year, but the veteran batter says he’s not done with Test cricket just yet.

The 37-year-old was spotted at Lord’s during the ongoing India vs England series, and in a chat with Sky Sports Cricket, Rahane made his intentions clear.

“I Still Want to Play Test Cricket” – Rahane

Speaking with broadcasters, Rahane said he still carries the same passion for red-ball cricket as he always has.

“It’s good to be here. I still want to play Test cricket. I am really passionate about playing Test cricket, and at this moment, I am enjoying my cricket,” Rahane said.

He added that he’s keeping himself fit and preparing for the upcoming domestic season.

“Just here for a few days, and I carried my training clothes so that I can keep myself fit. Our domestic season is starting, so the preparation has just begun,” he said.

WTC Final Was His Last Appearance

Rahane last played for India in the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia. He scored fighting runs there but hasn’t been picked since.

In his career so far, the Mumbai batter has played 85 Tests and scored 5077 runs.

Earlier this year, Rahane also spoke about his hunger to return.

“I would love to be back in the Indian set-up again. The desire, the hunger, the fire is still there,” he had said.

Rahane has captained India in six Test matches, most notably during the famous 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar series win in Australia.

After India were bowled out for 36 in Adelaide and Virat Kohli flew home, Rahane took over as captain and scored a gritty hundred in Melbourne.

That knock became a turning point in a series India went on to win 2-1, despite several injuries.

“I am a guy who will never give up. I have been playing domestic cricket and I’m really enjoying my cricket at the moment,” he said.

Whether selectors bring Rahane back remains to be seen, but his message is loud and clear, he’s not done yet.
