Why Mohammed Siraj Got Dropped from Champions Trophy 2025 Squad? Rohit Sharma Explains
Mohammed Siraj failed to find a spot in the Indian squad for the ICC Champions Trophy.

In a surprising move, the Indian selectors have left out fast bowler Mohammed Siraj from the 15-member squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Despite his excellent track record, he failed to make the cut for the marquee event in Dubai, which will be held later this year. Instead, pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Arshdeep Singh were included in the squad.
Skipper Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar provided clarity on the decision during the squad announcement. They explained that the team’s composition was influenced by the challenging conditions in UAE, which often demand more all-rounders and fewer pacers. With a focus on versatility, the selectors opted for just three seamers in the squad, with a greater emphasis on all-round options.
Arshdeep Singh Over Mohammed Siraj
Rohit Sharma made it clear that Arshdeep Singh, with his ability to bowl effectively in the death overs, was given the edge over Siraj. Arshdeep’s consistent performances in the white-ball formats and his proven skills in pressure situations helped him secure a spot.
“It’s unfortunate that Siraj has to miss out,” said Rohit Sharma during the press conference. “But we wanted a bowler who can bowl both with the new ball and in the death overs. Arshdeep has the experience and capability to take on that role. We’re only taking three seamers, and we felt Arshdeep was the best fit for the squad.”
The Uncertainty Around Jasprit Bumrah
Another major factor in Siraj’s exclusion was the uncertainty surrounding Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness. Though Bumrah has been included in the squad, there are concerns about his recovery from a back injury. The selectors decided to include Bumrah with the hope that he will be fit in time for the tournament. If Bumrah is unable to play, Harshit Rana will replace him for the ODI series against England.
“The decision to pick Bumrah is based on the hope that he will recover in time. If not, we have Harshit Rana available as a replacement,” Rohit explained.
Mohammed Shami, who is making his return after a long break, was also preferred over Siraj for the Champions Trophy. Shami’s experience and ability to bowl in various conditions made him an automatic choice in the squad. His return to full fitness and form was a big plus, and his ability to bowl both with the new ball and in the middle overs gave him the edge.
