“We Needed Variety in Spin” – Ajit Agarkar on Ravindra Jadeja’s Absence from Australia ODI Squad
Ravindra Jadeja’s ODI future in doubt after being dropped for Australia series; Ajit Agarkar calls it a strategic decision.
Ravindra Jadeja’s future in ODI cricket has come under question after the star all-rounder was left out of India’s squad for the upcoming three-match series against Australia.
The decision by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee has surprised many, given Jadeja’s consistent performances in recent years.
Jadeja, who played a key role in India’s Champions Trophy 2025 triumph, was not picked for the series Down Under.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained that the call was purely strategic and based on team balance.
“We can’t take two left-arm spinners to Australia. Jadeja is already in the scheme of things, but there is always competition for places. It’s just a three-match series, and we couldn’t fit everyone in,” Agarkar said.
With Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar already part of the squad, the selectors opted for a mix that suited Australian conditions better.
“We wanted variety in spin. Jadeja is still in our plans, but we had to choose based on conditions and squad balance,” Agarkar added.
The decision has raised eyebrows as Jadeja remains one of India’s most reliable all-rounders. He was named Player of the Match in the recent Test against West Indies for his century and four wickets.
In the Champions Trophy, he took five wickets and provided crucial breakthroughs in key matches. At 36, Jadeja’s absence could mark the beginning of a transition phase for India’s ODI side.
With younger players like Axar Patel and Washington Sundar offering similar skills, the competition for the all-rounder’s spot has intensified.
However, Agarkar’s comments suggest the door isn’t completely shut for the veteran. “He’s a top performer and an excellent fielder. It’s not the end for him. He remains part of our long-term plans,” he clarified.
