Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni to Retire from IPL Together? Huge Update Before RCB vs CSK Clash

Virat Kohli suggested that the RCB vs CSK match could be his and Dhoni's final face-off in the IPL.

Virat Kohli is looking forward to a special clash this Saturday, May 18th, as Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) take on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. But there’s more to this match than just points in the IPL 2024. Kohli hinted that it could be the last time he shares the field with legendary teammate MS Dhoni.

The two Indian stalwarts have been a constant presence in the national team for over 16 years. Their last international outing together was the heartbreaking World Cup semi-final against New Zealand in 2019. Despite their age difference, Kohli has immense respect for Dhoni, calling him “Mahi bhai” and acknowledging their successful partnership.

Speaking on Jio Cinema, Kohli said:

“For fans to see him (Dhoni) play in any stadium in India is a big thing. Me & him playing again, maybe for the last time, you never know – that is a special thing.” He added, “We have had some great memories, some great partnerships for India, it’s a great occasion for fans to see us together.”

Beyond the nostalgia, both RCB and CSK are in a tight race for the playoffs. RCB specifically needs a win against Chennai by 18 runs or chase the target with 11 balls remaining to secure a top-4 spot.

Kohli also used Dhoni‘s example while addressing criticism he’s faced regarding his batting approach. He pointed out how Dhoni’s calm demeanor and ability to win matches under pressure were often questioned, despite his remarkable record.

“People used to say the same about Mahi bhai (Mahendra Singh Dhoni). ‘Why is he taking the game to 20th over or 50th over.’ But how many matches did he finish for India!” remarked Kohli.

“He’s probably the only person who knows what he’s doing! And he’s finishing the game from there. For me, that’s muscle memory. He knows if he takes the match till the last over, he’ll win the game.”

Currently leading the IPL 2024 with the Orange Cap, Kohli has been in phenomenal form, scoring 661 runs in 13 games with an impressive average and strike rate.
