Speaking on social media, Kaif questioned the BCCI’s timing, saying Rohit deserved to continue till the 2027 World Cup.

“Rohit Sharma gave 16 years to Indian cricket, aur usko ek saal nehi de paye? Out of 16 ICC matches, India won 15 and lost only one, the 2023 World Cup final,” Kaif said.

Kaif also reminded that under Rohit’s leadership, India lifted back-to-back ICC trophies, the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy in Dubai. He was even the Player of the Match in the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand, where India won by four wickets.

The former India batter called Rohit’s removal “unfair”, pointing out that the veteran had always put the team first and even retired from Tests at the right time to allow youngsters to step up.

“He taught and guided the next generation of players, but despite that, he wasn’t given a full cycle till 2027. It feels harsh,” Kaif added.

Taking a direct dig at the selectors, Kaif said the board was “going overboard” by giving too much too soon to Shubman Gill.

“Gill is young, talented and has a bright future. But what was the need to rush? His time would’ve come anyway, right now, it was still Rohit Sharma’s time,” he concluded.
