Suryakumar Yadav Fears Losing T20I Captaincy to Shubman Gill
Suryakumar Yadav admits he feels pressure from Shubman Gill as T20I captain, but says it motivates him and praises their strong camaraderie.
India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has opened up about feeling pressure from Shubman Gill, who is fast becoming a key leader across all formats.
SKY said the feeling is real but motivating, and that he shares a good bond with the rising star. Gill, who now leads India in Tests and ODIs, was recently made vice-captain in the T20I squad.
The decision was seen as preparing him to eventually take over the T20I captaincy. SKY admitted that having Gill right behind him does create some fear of losing the role.
“I am very happy for him that he has become captain in two formats,” SKY told Indian Express. “He has done really well. I won’t lie, everyone feels that fear. But it is the kind of fear that keeps you motivated.”
The Mumbai Indians batter has led India to an Asia Cup victory as T20I captain, even though he does not captain his domestic or IPL teams. His recent batting form has dipped, but SKY says the pressure does not shake him.
“The camaraderie between me and him is amazing off the field and on it. I know what kind of player and human he is. So it just motivates me to do well, but I am happy for him,” he added.
For now, Suryakumar Yadav remains in charge of India’s T20I side. He will lead them in the upcoming series in Australia and has his eyes on the next year’s home T20 World Cup.
