Sunil Gavaskar Names A Player Set to Secure a Permanent Opening Spot in the Indian Team After England Test Series
According to Sunil Gavaskar, Jaiswal has the potential to become a reliable Test opener for Team India
Former Indian cricketer and legend Sunil Gavaskar, believes that Yashasvi Jaiswal, the emerging batting talent, holds the promise to establish himself as a consistent test opener for Team India post the five-match series against England.
Sunil Gavaskar further added that Yashasvi Jaiswal won’t be troubled by home conditions much, providing him an excellent opportunity to solidify his position as an opening batter within the team.
“Yashasvi Jaiswal will easily settle in home conditions. He’s also a left-hander. I think he’ll establish himself completely in the Indian Test team after this series,” Sunil Gavaskar told Star Sports.
Jaiswal, who marked his debut with an impressive 171 against the West Indies, faced a dip in form during the recent two-Test series in South Africa, managing only 50 runs. The series also witnessed India’s Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Shreyas Iyer scoring 60, 74, and 41 runs, respectively.
Sunil Gavaskar further stated that Rohit Sharma’s captaincy would be put to test in the opening match against England in Hyderabad. The former Indian captain wants the Mumbai batter to use his bowling resources properly on the traditional batting-friendly surface.
“As captain, he (Rohit Sharma) needs to use his bowlers cleverly. Usually in Hyderabad, there is not enough turn on offer, so if England bats first and make a successful start till lunch, there we’ve to see how he uses his bowlers to judge him.”
The first test match between India and England will be played at Rajiv Gandhi, International Cricket Stadium, on January 25. Virat Kohli has already been ruled out of the first two test matches against England, for personal reasons and the BCCI will soon announce a replacement for him.
