In what could be the start of a new era in Indian cricket, Shubman Gill is reportedly set to be named vice-captain for India in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, and could soon succeed Rohit Sharma as ODI skipper.
As per reports, Gill will be Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy in the eight-team tournament starting September 9.
The 25-year-old’s return to the T20I set-up comes after more than a year, his last appearance being in July 2024.
Gill’s promotion is seen as a reward for his stellar IPL 2025 campaign, where he amassed 650 runs in 15 innings at an average of 50.
His recent stint as India’s Test captain in England, guiding the team to a hard-fought 2-2 draw, has further strengthened his leadership credentials in the eyes of the selectors.

Meanwhile, Gill is not just being groomed for vice-captaincy duties; he is also the BCCI’s preferred choice to take over as India’s ODI captain from Rohit Sharma.
While the exact timeline remains unclear, Gill is widely seen as the front-runner for the role, ahead of other contenders like Hardik Pandya and Shreyas Iyer.
Pressure Mounts on Rohit & Kohli
The development comes amid growing uncertainty over the futures of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the ODI set-up.
The BCCI has reportedly asked both stalwarts to feature in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in December to be considered for the 2027 ODI World Cup, or step aside after the upcoming Australia ODIs in October.
