Rohit Sharma to Announce Retirement from T20Is: Report
We might see a new captain leading India in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.
Rohit Sharma plans to step away from T20Is, redirecting his focus towards ODIs and Tests, PTI reported on Wednesday (Nov 22). Now, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee faces the task of naming a new captain ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024.
Rohit Sharma was appointed the captain of India’s T20I team following India’s disappointing World Cup 2021 campaign, during which Virat Kohli stepped down from the captaincy. Later, Rohit went on to become the all-format captain of India.
Notably, neither Rohit Sharma nor Virat Kohli has featured in India’s T20I lineup since the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, where the team faced an embarrassing 10-wicket defeat in the semi-final.
Recently, India lost the World Cup 2023, which was their best chance to end their decade-long ICC trophy drought. The defeat came at the hands of Australia, who secured victory by six wickets at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
In the past year, Rohit Sharma’s leadership saw India losing the T20 World Cup 2022, the World Test Championship 2023, and the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. It will be interesting to see if the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee gives him another chance and allows him to stay at the helm until the Champions Trophy in 2025.
