The 13th edition of the Indian Premier League, which began during the Corona period, is breaking all records of popularity. The tournament was on verge of being cancelled at one point of time. With around Rs 4000 crore at stake, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) then decided to shift the season to United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the opening match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) has created history.

It has been claimed that a record 200 million viewers watched the first match of the tournament on September 19, which is a record in itself.

The inaugural match was played between the Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, where Dhoni-led Chennai defeated MI by 5 wickets.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah shared this information on his Twitter handle. As per Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC), the tournament’s opener registered highest-ever opening day viewership for any sporting league in any country with 20 crore viewers watching it on TV as well as online platforms

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah took to Twitter and wrote,

“As per BARC, an unprecedented 20 crore people tuned in to watch the match. Highest ever opening day viewership for any sporting league in any country- no league has ever opened as big as this. @IPL @SGanguly99 @UShanx @DisneyPlusHS.”
