Pat Cummins may miss India series with back injury, giving relief to Kohli and Rohit but worrying Australia before Ashes.

The Australian Test captain underwent back scans after experiencing discomfort during the recent West Indies series. According to The Sydney Morning Herald, consultations with Cricket Australia’s medical staff are ongoing, but early signs suggest Cummins could miss the T20Is against New Zealand and the limited-overs series in India starting October 19.

Ashes in Doubt?

With the Ashes beginning on November 21 in Perth, Australia is unlikely to risk their premier fast bowler. Reports claim Cummins may have to skip all white-ball cricket leading up to the first Ashes Test, including a possible Sheffield Shield appearance for New South Wales. He has already been left out of the squad for the New Zealand tour beginning October 1.

“There may be some concern among Australia’s selectors and medical staff about the prospect of Cummins pulling up sore after a tour in which he bowled relatively few overs,” the report added. The fear of aggravating the injury so close to the Ashes is keeping the Aussies on edge.

Why Kohli and Rohit Will be Smiling

For India, Cummins’ absence could be a blessing. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are set to return to the national side for the first time since the Champions Trophy in February. Facing Australia without their pace spearhead gives them some breathing room as they look to ease back into international cricket.

Cummins has a fine record against both stalwarts. He has dismissed Rohit in their last five meetings, including the Champions Trophy semi-final, and has also removed Kohli five times in Tests. Without him, the challenge for India’s senior duo may not be as daunting.
