Not Kohli or Dhoni, Sanju Samson Picks This Star as His Cricketing Idol
Sanju Samson names Rohit Sharma as his cricket idol, praises 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s fearless batting in IPL 2025.
Sanju Samson has revealed that his cricketing hero is none other than Rohit Sharma. The Rajasthan Royals skipper made the revelation during a chat with Ravichandran Ashwin on his YouTube show Kutti Stories with Ash.
The choice surprised Ashwin, as most wicketkeeper-batters usually look up to legends like MS Dhoni or Adam Gilchrist. Samson, however, said it was Rohit who inspired him the most.
When asked about a current player who excites him, Samson named 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The youngster was part of the Rajasthan Royals squad in IPL 2025 and impressed his captain with fearless batting.
In his debut season, the left-handed opener scored 252 runs in 7 matches at an average of 36, with a staggering strike rate of over 206. Samson believes Vaibhav has a bright future.
Rohit Sharma retired from T20 internationals in 2024, along with Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, right after India’s T20 World Cup triumph. Following Rohit’s exit, Samson stepped into the opening role for India in the shortest format.
So far, Samson has scored 861 runs in T20Is at an average of 25.3 and a strike rate of 152.4. He is expected to open for India in the upcoming Asia Cup, carrying forward the legacy of the player he admires most.
