No More DRS for IPL 2024; BCCI Introduces New Rule

In place of DRS, BCCI will now use Smart Replay System for more accurate results.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is introducing a Smart Replay System for quicker and more accurate reviews in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season, starting from March 22nd.

As per a report of ESPNCricinfo, the main goal behind introduction of this system is to make decisions faster and more accurate this season. Under this, there will be more split screens and improved frame rates.

Under the Smart Replay system, TV umpires will directly receive inputs from Hawk-Eye operators located in the same room. These operators will utilize images captured by eight high-speed Hawk-Eye cameras positioned around the venue.

Contrary to previous methods, the TV director will no longer serve as an intermediary between the third umpire and the Hawk-Eye operator.

How Does a Smart Replay System Work?

The report also confirms that the Smart Replay System will provide the TV umpire with more visual inputs than before, including split-screen images. For instance, it will now be possible to see both the fielder’s hands and feet simultaneously during a mid-air catch, helping to determine if any part of the fielder’s body touched the boundary rope.

With the Smart Replay System, viewers will see the precise moment when the fielder released the throw and the position of the batters, aiding in stumping decisions and providing clearer views of catches taken inches off the ground.

Umpires Approve Smart Replay System

Additionally, the Smart Replay System is anticipated to accelerate the game’s pace. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) organized a 2-day workshop on the new system, involving approximately 15 umpires, comprising Indian and overseas professionals, who will utilize it in the upcoming IPL 2024 season.
