Matthew Breetzke is on fire in ODIs. The South African right-hander smashed 88 runs against Australia in the second ODI on August 22, marking his fourth consecutive fifty-plus score in just four games.
Breetzke had already made headlines with a record-breaking 150 on his ODI debut against New Zealand, surpassing Desmond Haynes’s 148.
He followed that with 83 against Pakistan and a half-century in his first match back against Australia after a six-month gap.
With this latest innings, Breetzke now holds the record for the most runs in an ODI career after the first five games, scoring 378 runs in just four matches. This overtakes Netherlands’ Tom Cooper, who had 374 runs in his first five ODIs.
The youngster has also joined Navjot Singh Sidhu and Tom Cooper as one of only three batters to score four 50+ scores in their first five ODIs.
If Breetzke reaches another fifty in the third ODI, he will become the first player in ODI history to record five 50+ scores in the first five matches, setting a landmark that could stand for years.
