“Need a Break”: Prithvi Shaw Shares Cryptic Message Ahead of IPL 2025 Restart

Prithvi Shaw posts cryptic “need a break” message before IPL 2025 restart; future uncertain after auction snub

Prithvi Shaw has once again made headlines but not for his batting. Just days before the IPL 2025 season is set to restart, Shaw posted a cryptic message on Instagram saying he “needs a break,” sparking fresh speculation about his mindset and future in cricket.

The IPL resumes on May 17 after being suspended due to India-Pakistan tensions earlier in the season. But Shaw, who was once seen as a rising star in Indian cricket, will not be part of it. He went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction, despite setting his base price at ₹75 lakh.

Shaw has not played competitive cricket since December 2024, when he featured in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Since then, he has stayed out of the spotlight, and his Instagram post has only added to the questions around his career.

The 24-year-old was also dropped from the Mumbai domestic team earlier this year, reportedly due to fitness and discipline issues. These concerns have been building for a while, and many believe it has hurt his chances of making a comeback at both IPL and national levels.

PBKS batter Shashank Singh, who has faced Shaw in domestic cricket, recently commented on the situation. He said Shaw has all the talent in the world but needs to fix his basics and show better work ethic.

“Prithvi Shaw is talented, and he can achieve anything if he gets his basics right. I have played club cricket with him and he has a different viewpoint on a few things,” he told on a podcast of Shubhankar Mishra.

“He needs to change his work ethic, and if he can do it successfully, it would be the best thing for Indian cricket,” he added

Shaw was once seen as a future India opener after scoring a century on Test debut in 2018. However, injuries, form, and off-field issues have stalled his progress. The latest post seems to hint at emotional or mental fatigue, though Shaw hasn’t shared any details.

For now, fans and former players alike hope Shaw can regroup and find a way back. But unless there’s a change in approach, the road back to top-level cricket may remain difficult.
