Najmul Shanto Calls Comparing International Cricket to IPL Illogical
Najmul Shanto said there’s no comparison between International Cricket and IPL.
The ongoing season of the IPL 2024 has been a high-scoring affair, with many teams posting huge totals. The tournament has even seen the record for the highest-ever total in an innings broken several times.
With the T20 World Cup 2024 approaching soon, many experts believe that the run-fest could continue in the World Cup.
However, Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto disagrees. Shanto believes that the big scores seen in the IPL are not likely to be replicated in the T20 World Cup. He argues that IPL and international cricket are very different formats.
Najmul Shanto points to the example of the PSL (Pakistan Super League) 2023, where many high scores were recorded. However, he argues that such scores are not easy to come by in international cricket.
“You can’t compare IPL with international cricket at all, I think even in last year’s PSL [Pakistan Super League], scores over 200 and even in excess of 250 were scored. But from my understanding, if a team makes over 160, around 175-180 or 200, that’s a very good score in international cricket. You don’t see such scores too often,” Shanto was quoted as saying by The Daily Star.
Najmul Shanto believes that teams will only be able to score around 160-180 runs on good wickets in the World Cup. He highlights that comparing the IPL with the World Cup is illogical.
“I think we will see similar scores in the World Cup, the scores will be around 160-180 on good wickets. The bowlers will have to defend those scores or teams would have to chase it. I don’t think a comparison with the IPL is logical in any way,” Shanto said.
Bangladesh will begin their T20 World Cup campaign against Sri Lanka on Saturday, June 8.
