MLC 2025: Glenn Maxwell Appointed as the Captain of Washington Freedom
Glenn Maxwell recently retired from ODI cricket
Glenn Maxwell has been officially named the new captain of Washington Freedom for the upcoming 2025 edition of Major League Cricket (MLC). The Australian all-rounder replaces Steven Smith, who led the team in the previous season.
Maxwell recently announced his retirement from ODI cricket to focus fully on T20s, keeping in mind the T20 World Cup next year. With this new role, he is set to play a major part in Washington Freedom’s title defence.
Maxwell Takes Over, Pooran Also Joins Leadership Club
Maxwell is not the only big name to step into leadership for MLC 2025. West Indian batter Nicholas Pooran, who recently retired from international cricket, has been named the captain of MI New York.
Corey Anderson will continue to lead the San Francisco Unicorns, making him the only local (USA-eligible) captain among all six teams.
Anderson previously played for New Zealand but now represents the USA in international cricket. South African star Heinrich Klaasen remains at the helm of the Seattle Orcas.
Sunil Narine is expected to continue leading Los Angeles Knight Riders, while Faf du Plessis will stay on as captain of Texas Super Kings.
Freedom Eye Another Title in MLC 2025
Washington Freedom are the defending MLC champions. They lifted the trophy last season after beating San Francisco Unicorns in the final.
The new season will begin on June 13, with Freedom facing the Unicorns in the opening match in Oakland. The final is scheduled to take place on July 12.
