Matthew Breetzke Becomes First Ever to Smash 150 on ODI Debut

Matthew Breetzke hammered 150 runs on his ODI debut.

South African opener Matthew Breetzke etched his name in cricket history on Monday, becoming the first batter to score 150 or more runs on his ODI debut. Playing against New Zealand in the Pakistan Tri-Series at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, the 26-year-old delivered a stunning knock of 150 runs off 148 balls, hitting 11 fours and five sixes.

Before Breetzke’s incredible feat, the record for the highest ODI debut score was held by West Indies’ Desmond Haynes, who had scored 148 runs against Australia in 1978. For South Africa, the previous highest debut score belonged to Colin Ingram, who smashed 124 runs against Zimbabwe in 2010.

A Record-Breaking Debut

Opening the innings, Breetzke showed composure and confidence, building key partnerships to anchor South Africa’s innings. He reached his half-century at a steady pace before accelerating in the later stages. His ability to handle pressure and find boundaries regularly helped South Africa gain the upper hand against New Zealand’s bowling attack.

Breetzke’s name now stands at the top of the list of highest scores on ODI debut, surpassing some of the finest players in cricket history. The table below highlights how his innings rewrote record books:
